Hi Alex,
You’ll ship 60 cartons of 60x45x40(cm), a total of 6.48 CBMs. It is good for you to ship them by sea. As for the import duty, you can search for the HS code of glass on this GOV website: https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty, the HS code corresponds to its duty rate, and then according to the formula: Import duty= duty rate * declared value of the goods, you can get the tax you should pay.

Hi Courtney,
Forgive me to reply you so late, maybe you’ve found the answer. Firstly, you can check the HS code of paper packaging on the UK government site: http://www.gov.uk. And the HS code is related to the materials of products. For example, the carton you purchased, their main material is paper. I did a search and found the HS code https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/sections, which showed 20% VAT and 0% duty. Import duty= duty rate* declare goods value. As for VAT and duty rate, which may be slightly adjusted according to the country’s policies and economic conditions. Generally, there is little change in the duty rate for some regular goods. You should pay attention to your official government website to get real-time and accurate information or consult some reliable forwarders. I hope my reply is helpful to you, Courtney. If you have any other questions, let me know by leaving messages.

I’m not buying for profit and have no company. I have been advised that I have to use a freight agent to import them can anyone offer advice on how to do this and what company may be able to assist.

Thanks

I want to ship packaging from China to the UK for my business. It is paper packaging, boxes and a gift bag. We are ordering 100 x boxes and 200 x gift bags. The total cost comes to $355 for the products and an extra $550 for the shipping. So $905 in total which equates to £656 at the current exchange rate. I am struggling to figure out the duties on importing paper packaging. Would you be able to help me understand the total duties and VAT due on this import?

Is there a standard import duty % for paper packaging?
Is VAT always 20% from China?

Thanks so much – really appreciate your help!

Hi Hollie,
Let me know your cargo volume and the shipping methods recommended by your supplier.

When previously importing clothing from China, the supplier arranged shipping directly to me, and the courier invoiced me the import tax on arrival to the UK. I understand things have changed now but am struggling to understand exactly what tax/import duty I will need to pay.

Also, my new supplier has offered two options for shipping – “not including tax shipping cost by air 6-8 working days”, and “including tax shipping cost by air 8-12 working days). They have said to me the second option is slower but cheaper as includes tax. Can you advise on this at all? It seems the preferential option as won’t take too much longer, but I am unsure on what tax would be included and if there would still be additional tax/duty charges when the clothing arrives?

I have been searching the internet on this for a couple of days now with no luck as any advise is great! Thank you in advance

Hi Angus,
Sorry to reply to you so late, I found your message just now.
Generally, all importers are required to pay UK duty + VAT. As for “my turnover isn’t over 80k a year” you mentioned, I’m not clear about it. I think you should confirm with your VAT tax authorities. As for the exact HS code of your sticker products, you should check with the freight forwarder to make it clear. After all, I don’t know about your product, so I can’t provide you with an accurate code.
